An Interactivist Perspective of Autonomous Robotic Sign Users

چکیده

In this paper we present an interactivist perspective on design principles for autonomous sign users such as autonomous robots. Past discussions have centered around symbol grounding or anchoring where concepts are considered prototypes in the perceptual space of a robot or animal. Here we advocate a more complex view starting from the purpose of using signs or pursuing sign acts. We argue that concepts actually serve a number of purposes and revisit techniques for representing and memorizing concepts. Our own proposal focuses on the intentional and anticipatory aspects of sign acts and on anticipatory representations. This research is aimed at designing architectures for growing up autonomous sign users.

Are Autonomous Mobile Robots Able to Take Over Construction? A Review

Although construction has been known as a highly complex application field for autonomous robotic systems, recent advances in this field offer great hope for using robotic capabilities to develop automated construction. Today, space research agencies seek to build infrastructures without human intervention, and construction companies look to robots with the potential to improve construction qua...

A temporal-interactivist perspective on the dynamics of mental states

* URLs: http://www.cs.vu.nl/{~jonker,~treur} Email addresses: {jonker, treur}@cs.vu.nl Abstract This paper addresses the dynamics of mental states in relation to the dynamics of the interaction with the external world. It contributes a formalised temporal-interactivist approach to these dynamics based on temporal traces for semantics and on a temporal trace language to provide an expressive mea...

The Rehabilitation Robots FRIEND-I & II: Daily Life Independency through Semi-Autonomous Task-Execution

The rehabilitation robotic systems FRIEND1-I (Martens et al., 2001) and its successor FRIEND-II have been developing at the Institute of Automation (IAT), University of Bremen, Germany, since 1997 and 2003 respectively. The systems belong to the category “intelligent wheelchair mounted manipulators”. They focus on users with high spinal cord injury, or with similar handicaps, who are unable to ...

A Biosemiotic Framework for Artificial Autonomous Sign Users

In this paper we critically analyse fundamental assumptions underlying approaches to symbol anchoring and symbol grounding. A conceptual framework inspired by biosemiotics is developed for the study of signs in autonomous artificial sign users. Our theory of reference uses an ethological analysis of animal-environment interaction. We first discuss semiotics with respect to the meaning of signal...
